Bumps on the F and J keyboard keys

Ever wondered why is there bumps on the F and J keyboard keys? , The question itself gives a very strange feeling; we techies play around on the keyboard alot but have never given a thought why there are bumps on F & J keys.

These bumps are for people who type without looking. They are on F and J because, if you type properly, both of your index fingers are on them. which some people call them HOMEBASE.

The bumps or nipples found on the F and J keys on the keyboard helps users correctly position their left and right hand on the keyboard without having to look at it. For example, without looking at the keyboard you can easily position your left index finger on the F and the right index finger on the J, which then positions all the remainder of your fingers in the correct position.

Happy Typing ;-)

Cheers,
All the Best ...... :)

  1. That is also coz of keyboards of pcs were designed on the base of traditional telephone keypads which has the key 5 with bump which was done in-order to give visually challenged person a way to use the key pad .

  2. Sanjat is wrong. These keyboard bumps are so you know where you fingers are. They use slightly more material so it doesn't make sense for manufacturers to use the same mold.
